2012 Trends, Tips & Valentines Proposal Do’s & Don’ts

January 23, 2012

2012 is shaping up to be a pretty good year so far, the Giants are in the Superbowl, Valentines Day is right around the corner, we have had a beautiful and mild winter and the world is currently covered in an innocent yet romantic blanket of that fluffy white stuff we love to look at but hate to say 🙂

2012 is also shaping up to be filled with some of the trendiest and unique weddings we have seen in years. with more and more celebrity weddings being televised and pictures published brides are “stealing” some of these cultural icons fabulous ideas. Many couples are  moving away from simplicity and moving toward a party style soiree filled with neutral colors highlighted with bright accents making certain things pop!

Funky and fun looking flowers are taking the place of the more traditional roses and lilies and even the traditional introductions of the bride and groom into the reception has taken a detour from tradition. You will be seeing more choreographed dancing, upbeat music, and just plain craziness!

Weddings are coming out of their recession funk and couples are spending more to make their night even more memorable. Cupcakes, dessert bars & candy buffets are becoming the “in thing” to have along with something unique that will leave your guests in Awww.

Hiring bohemian or Hawaiian dancers to do fire shows, red carpets with paparazzi snapping guests photos, or even black jack table set up  during cocktail hour are guaranteed to be awesome wow factors.

However, why wait until the wedding day to show off yours and your loves personalities?

2012 is also the biggest year for the fellas out their to step it up in the proposal front.

While the bended knee will always be a classic the ladies seem to be getting tired of “Will you Marry Me?” flashing across jumbo-trons at sports arenas, stunning engagement rings at the bottom of champagne glasses and scenarios that you stole from movies. The box inside a box inside a box inside a box routine from Serendipity or slipping the ring down a string of twine that is tied to your girls finger from StepMom or even the romantic proposal from Collin Firth in Love Acually where he asks his love to marry him in her native language (which he doesn’t speak) are all classic ways to ask for her hand in marriage but they have been used and abused.

Let your personality shine through in your proposal, ask her underwater during a diving trip or in the middle of the night while shes studying for an exam or preparing for a board meeting and is completly exhausted and thinks shes the exact opposite of beautiful in her PJ’s.

Spell out “Will You Marry Me?” in glow and the dark stars above the bed so its the first thing she sees when she flicks off the light to go to sleep. Make the background of her cell phone screen or computer a picture of you holding a sign asking her that big question. Take her on a romantic Valentines day trip and do not pop the question but wait until your home unpacking and being lazy, when she least expects it 🙂

Bring her a cup of coffee in a very special mug

Most of all Keep it coming from the heart. Let all the hoopla and planning  come during the wedding day, keeping it simple and from the heart on the engagement day is the new trend. You don’t have to go all out and make a huge show for your soon to be fiancee just make sure no matter what you say or do it comes from the heart and she’ll say yes 🙂

Something Old, New, Borrowed, Blue & a What…..?

October 24, 2011

“Something old, something new. Something borrowed, something blue.” The expression has been around for what seems like forever, but where did it come from? The saying orignates from an old English poem:

Something old, something new

Something borrowed, something blue

And a silver sixpence in her shoe.

Each item is said to represent good luck for the couple. If the bride carries all of the four tokens, the marriage will be happy and long-lasting. The something old represents the connection between the bride’s family and the memories that they share. Something new symbolizes the positivity in bride’s new life with her husband. The token of something borrowed is usually a keepsake from someone close to the bride that has been happily married. The good energy from the borrowed item is said to transfer to the bride and give her the same joy-filled marriage. The something blue originates from the popularity of the blue wedding gown until the early 19th century. Having a blue token on your wedding day represents past traditions and keeps them alive.

So, what can you use for these items on your wedding day? The best part is, this is completely your decision! This gives you the chance to express your individuality as a bride; however, the following are just a few suggestions to get your thoughts rolling:

Something Old:

  • A locket with photos of your parents or grandparents on their wedding day.
  • A piece of fabric from a childhood article of clothing, either sewn into your gown or used as a wrap for your bouquet.
  • Wearing a relative’s wedding gown, or using the fabric to to make your own gown.
Something New:

  • New shoes, jewelry, or any other accessories.
  • Your wedding gown.
  • A special set of lingerie to wear on your wedding night.

Something Borrowed:

  • A piece of jewelry from someone who is close to you.
  • A veil, tiara, or other headpiece.
  • A brooch to use as a detail on your dress.

Something Blue:

  • A pair of blue shoes.
  • A blue lingerie garter, or even a pair of underwear.

Blue tulle or crinoline used to add more volume to your dress

Silver Sixpence:

This tradition is said to have began in Scotland where a Groom used to put a sixpence in his shoe for good luck. Now it is suppose to bring wealth and financial security, for optimum fortune please remember to keep the sixpence in your shoe!

Kris and Kim’s Happily Ever After!

October 19, 2011

After months of anticipation, secrets, and hype, it is all over. The wedding of reality-TV star Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries, of the New Jersey Nets, aired last Sunday and Monday on the E! Network. An estimated 3.2 million viewers tuned in to watch the couple exchange vows. The event was publicized solely by E! and the network, as well as the Kardashian family, remained very secretive during the 3-month long engagement and the nearly 2 months between the wedding and the television debut. Though the television special, “Kim’s Fairytale Wedding,” was four hours long and many found all of the material unnecessary, the wedding itself was beautiful. From the dresses, of which there were three, to the venue, the nuptials were spectacular. There are a lot of negative things that people say about Kim, but one thing that cannot be taken from her is her impeccable taste. Surely there are many brides who saw something at Kris and Kim’s wedding that they would like to incorporate into their own special day. Not all of us have a Kardashian-size budget, but the good news is that with a little creativity, you, too, can have all you desire for your own fairytale wedding!

The Venue:

Kim and Kris:

For their venue, Kim and Kris chose the Sotto II Monte estate in Montecito, California. This estate, owned by a venture capitalist from Northern California, includes a 15,000 square-foot mansion on 10.9-acres, lush gardens, and breathtaking views of the Santa Ynez Mountains. Though the actual price of rental for an event, such as a wedding, has not been disclosed, the price of the estate itself is approximately $29 million.

Hudson Valley Possibilities:
The Hudson Valley is famous for its fabulous mansions and, of course, the beautiful views of the Hudson River. There are many possibilities for weddings in the area, from catering halls to outdoor locations. The following are just a few possibilities:

The Vanderbilt Mansion
Although it is not possible to hold your wedding reception at this well-known national park, you may obtain a special permit to hold your ceremony on the grounds. There are many options for ceremony locations throughout the property, such as the gardens, near thebeautiful weeping willow trees, or even overlooking the Hudson River. If you are not interested in having a ceremony at an outdoor location, permits may be granted to solely take wedding photographs.www.nps.gov/vama/planyourvisit/permits.htm

The Belvedere Mansion
This beautiful venue located in Staatsburg, New York allows for a truly elegant and unique wedding experience. The grounds allow you to “exchange vows in the formal English garden or in the gazebo at the pond, mingle with your guests over cocktails on the terrace, enjoy exquisite culinary cuisine, and dance the night away.”

The Grandview:
This catering hall has been voted Best Wedding Venue in the Hudson Valley by Hudson Valley Magazine. The panoramic views of the Hudson River are breathtaking and the service is impeccable. The facility offers two ballrooms, an indoor and an outdoor, to accommodate all couples. Like with Kris and Kim’s reception, your guests will continue to talk about your wedding for years to come.

www.grandviewevents.com

The Dresses:

Kim chose a total of three gowns created by renowned wedding dress designer Vera Wang. She had one for the ceremony, one for the first dance, and one for the remainder of the reception.

The ceremony dress was a simple, princess white ball gown

The first dance dress was a flattering, mermaid gown that had many detailed ruffles at the bottom and down the train

The final dress was a sleek, satin mermaid gown.

Budget-Friendly Possibilities:

As mentioned before, not everyone has the luxury of an unlimited budget for their special day; however, there are less expensive options out there that will still provide that “wow-factor” that is offered through having multiple dresses.

The Convertible Wedding Gown:

There are many dress designers that are offering the new trend of convertible wedding gowns. These creations are essentially one dress that has parts that can be taken off and added on the create multiple looks. For example, this dress is on the market thanks to Jasmine Couture.

Accessorizing:

In addition, you can change your look throughout the evening by simply switching accessories. This can be possible by changing your jewelry, your veil, or even adding a type of cover-up or a belt to your dress. This always can provide for a completely different look.

The Cake:

Kim and Kris:

The cake was a lavish confection that was taller than Kim herself! It matched the black and white color scheme, and was decorated with different patterns and textures throughout the layers. It has been reported that the couple spent between $15,000 and $20,000 on the creation designed by Hansen’s Cakes.

Budget-Friendly Possibilities:

While it is difficult to find cakes for an extremely inexpensive price, especially at this caliber, there is an increasingly popular trend emerging. Some bakeries will allow you to cover Styrofoam in fondant, making just the top layer in actual cake for the cake cutting. For the guests, sheet cakes can be kept back in the kitchen and only brought out when it is time to serve. No one will suspect that your cake is not real! This will lower the cost immensely from having the whole cake as an actual cake.

Just remember brides, you are all special and no matter your budget, it is possible to make all of your wedding day dreams come true!

Whether you are just looking for a DJ to complete your list, or you are in the beginning process of starting your planning, a Bridal Show is a great way to find  professionals for your event in one space at one time. The professionals that you hire will play a huge part in your wedding; this includes the entire time from the moment that you book them until the day of your event. They will be the ones to  help make your vision a reality, therefore  it’s very important that you make sure you explore your options.

An important factor is that you decide on the type of style you want for your wedding before committing to a specific professional. This will ensure a great fit between you and your vendor. So, how do you define your wedding style? Here are some tips:

Formal:

  • Ceremony is often held in a place of worship, with a reception in a hotel ballroom, historical venue/castle, or a type of country club.
  • The Wedding party consists of twelve or more guests, not including the bride and groom.
  • The bride wears/wants to wear an elaborately embellished gown with a long veil or train, maybe both.
  • The groom and ushers’ wear/will wear an attire of cutaway coats, tails, or tuxedos.
  • The reception consists of a sit-down dinner.
  • Entertainment consists of an orchestra, or a type of live band.
  • The newlyweds or the entire bridal party are transported in either a limousine or carriage.
  • Hired photographers use a style that is very traditional, with a lot of highly posed photographs.

Semi-Formal Wedding:

  • Ceremony is often held in a place of worship, or in the same location as your venue
  • The reception is held in a venue such as a banquet hall or at a outdoor venue that will most likely be tented.
  • The wedding party consists of up to six people on each side, not including the bride and groom.
  • The bride wears/will wear a simple wedding dress has little to no train, with less embellishment and beading.
  • The groom wears a suit, as opposed to a formal tuxedo.
  • The reception may be a sit-down dinner, but may also be in the form of a buffet.
  • For entertainment, guests may enjoy a DJ or band.
  • The wedding party may use a limousine or private automobile for transportation.
  • The photographer uses a contemporary photgraphing style, combining some posed shots with others that convey much more spontaneity.

Informal:

  • Ceremony and/or reception may be held in a venue such as a place of worship, a garden, park, or at a home of the couple’s family or friends.
  • The wedding party is smaller, consisting of less than six people on each side.
  • The bride wears a very simple wedding dress, a dress with a shorter hem, or a suit.
  • Groom will wear a suit, even possibly without a jacket.
  • The reception may consist of a small party at home or restaurant following the service.
  • Entertainment may be provided through a DJ, or even possibly through an iPod dock, as recent trends show.
  • A private automobile may be seen as transportation.
  • It is important for you as a bride to know that you can define your own style. These are merely guidelines to help you decide what type of professional to choose that will fit into the dream that will be your wedding day. Your style can be defined by a mix of the above components for any of the three main styles.

One way to determine the style of a professional is to take a look at their website. This should give you an idea of their body of work and if you like what you see, the next step would be to speak with them & finally to meet in person. Up & Coming 2012 Wedding Trends

September 21, 2011

As times change, wedding trends are changing as well.  As the 2011 wedding season begins to fade, the thought of what to do in 2012 is on future brides’ minds.  What are couples beginning to do differently?  Here are a few new trends out there that are going to be popping up at weddings everywhere.

Destination weddings are becoming huge with brides to be and groom’s to be.  Less and less people are getting married in traditional churches and opting for a beach wedding in a remote location.  If the couple does get married in a traditional church, receptions are becoming another way to have your wedding stand out and be in a unique location.  Finding an out-of-the-box location helps your wedding or reception be remembered and talked about by all of your guests.

As far as dresses go, brides have been into illusion necklines.  An illusion neckline looks like a strapless dress with

Compliments of Marie Claire

sheer veil material that covers the exposed chest and shoulders. These dresses come in a wide variety of styles, from one shoulder to long sleeved.  The sheer material can be embellished with gems or flowers, or left alone for a simple and elegant look.  This is ideal for brides who want a more conservative dress but still want to look sexy and show a bit of skin.

A trend that many people are beginning to follow; not just couples getting married; is going green!  Couples that feel strongly about the environment have found ways to go green at their wedding.  Whether it’s creativly using pre-owned items or using recycled paper for invitations, couples everywhere are finding ways to reduce their wedding’s impact on the environment.  Some couples even opt for an eco-friendly honeymoon, or a volunteer trip to give back to the world they live in.

These are all fairly safe when it comes to getting married, but there are also some crazy new trends becoming popular in the world of weddings.

The first on the list are bridal diapers, so that brides do not have to worry about having to use the bathroom after outfitted in her dress.  Sometimes having your maid of honor hold up your dress makes it hard for you to go to the bathroom, and is just plain awkward.  A bridal diaper can relieve that stress and take one more thing off your mind.

More and more people are including a special friend in their special day: their dog!  Walking down the aisle as a ring bearer- there are more and more canine friends becoming part of the wedding party.  We’re used to seeing young children strolling down the aisle in a mini-tux or puffy gown, but a pet is something that we’ve just started seeing walking down aisles everywhere.  Well-trained pups only please!

The video of the boogie-down-procession down the aisle has caused a major outburst of dancing toward the altar.  The original video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-94JhLEiN0 was aired on the news, and since then plenty of couples have been filming themselves and uploading the videos to YouTube, hoping to become part of the new craze.

Compliments of squareapplestudio.wordpress.com

Ever heard of a retail wedding?  For couples on a budget, getting married in your nearest fast food joint can be spontaneous and exciting, as well as cost-efficient.  Grab a few friends and surprise all of the diners in your local hangout by having them witness your vows.

A final crazy thing we saw was a life-size wedding cake of the bride!  The replica

Compliments of Barcroft Media

cake of bride Chidi Ogbuta of Allen, Texas stood over five feet tall, wearing the same dress and with hair styled in the exact same updo! The cake took five weeks to make, and after feeding 500 guests there were still leftovers to bring home!

No matter what unique things you want at your wedding, the most important part is that YOU are happy, and the wedding represents the bride and groom exactly as they want.

NYC Fashion Night Out!

September 14, 2011
Fashion’s Night Out hit eighteen countries this September; we were lucky to have New York City as one of these selected cities. On this night every year, occurring just before New York City’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, attendees found parties, deals on merchandise, prizes, and celebrities, such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Kimmora Lee Simmons, and the Kardashian sisters, endorsing their own products. With hundreds of stores participating in New York City alone, the one-night-only event promises to be the fashion event of the year.
As some may know, the well-known event made its first appearance in 2009, thanks to Vogue magazine’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, and with help from the Council of Fashion Designers of America, NYC & Company, and the City of New York. The idea was generated by Wintour to encourage shopping during the economic recession.  FNO debuted in eleven countries across the globe, and 700 stores in the United States participated. The event sparked such an interest and was so successful that the event became a global trend. The next year’s festivities, which included the largest public fashion show in history, was held in cities in Australia, Brazil, China, London, Paris, Berlin, Greece, India, Milan, Portugal, Russia, Spain, South Korea, Taiwan, and Turkey, on top of its original locations in the United States.
The event  held in New York City on September 8,  has gained much popularity since its debut just 2 years ago, was expected to be even bigger with its added locations and events this year. This year’s FNO will be located in over 250 cities this year, including cities in Italy, Greece, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Australia, and, of course, various cities in the United States. The 2011 event has also signed on over 200 online retailers to participate, extending the phenomenon to the World Wide Web.
Recently, Vogue released a statement about the upcoming Fashion’s Night Out that states: “While details on what to expect are still emerging, one thing is for sure: After putting together the largest public fashion show in New York City history last September, there is no telling what you can expect this year. We can promise, however, that across the globe, from Brooklyn to Berlin, it will be a night to remember—and all in support of all aspects of the fashion industry.” So what exactly is to come? The night will surely come with some surprises, however some details have been released. Internet sources have leaked information about Kate Walsh, star of ABC’s Private Practice, making an appearance to endorse her new perfume, Boyfriend, at Sephora. Solange Knowles and Ivanka Trump are said to be partying at Lord & Taylor, and Teresa Giudice, Real Housewife of New Jersey, will greet fans at the Macy’s on Staten Island!
This year’s Fashion Night Out is sure to be full of parties, prizes, and surprises and a great kick off to fashion week!
Did anyone attend FNO or any of this past weeks events?
